Character Planning Thread #16
« on: February 25, 2010, 03:27:40 pm »
This is the 16th character planning thread, where you can get advice from players who have been here for a while, and who have been around the block a couple of times. All character applications are required to be posted in this section before they can be posted in registration.  You may post general character concepts and general planning questions to this thread, but once you have developed enough to use the registration form, it is asked that you start a new thread to be focused solely on you character.

You must wait at least 1 week from posting your most recent profile in planning before you may post that profile to the registration. If a request for a change in your character's profile is made, you must either repost your character application with those changes taken into account (as opposed to merely editing the previous profile (so that the changes made can be seen and compared)), or quote that request when you post your application to the new thread. You may include a brief statement defending your profile, and stating why you do not think the change is necessary.

The purpose of this thread is not to delay you from getting your character, but instead to make sure that you have a chance to fix any issues that may cause people to vote against allowing your character into the RP, thus improving your chances of getting that character which you want. The thread is also here so that we can point out things that are unrealistic or abnormal for the world, even if they wouldn?t block your character from getting approved. This allows you to make your character fit the world better, and adds verisimilitude to the Mars Academy RPG.  Also, it?s here so that you can see the rules on making a character, so that you can meet them, or so that if a character type is disallowed, you will know and can pick another type before you get to in-depth.

Also, if you aren't sure about some aspect of your character concept, or are unsure of a detail that you need in order to continue with your character profile, this would the place to post your questions as you work on your profile.

Links to previous character planning threads can be seen below. Many of these threads are on one of the boards that the RP was on before it moved to this message board, so don't be alarmed if the message board you get linked to looks different.

If you're applying for a character that's been at the academy a while, what's happened to them at the academy? How have they spent their time here?

Notes:
You must be at least 16 to be IN the Academy. This is the general entry age and unless you have a really good excuse you should stick to this. There is a very small intermediary school for children of faculty and non-students. Your average students will not be married or have kids.

Type deals with whether the character is Administration, Faculty, Staff, Student, Security, or Civilian.
Function for teachers and students relates to what department or major they are attached too. For others, one should either list their precise position (such as Headmaster for Darius) or a sub-group (such as Customs or Hall Patrol for security).

The character's personality and history "blocks" are the two most important sections of this profile. This RP is primarily social in nature, so how your character will be interacting with their fellows is more important than what they're studying to become. Remember that there is a "WHY" on the end of "Name on thing your character would never do and why." Along with this, simple responses like "Hurt anyone, because he/she doesn't like to cause pain" don't give us the window into your character that we'd like to see from this question.

Regarding weapons, as there have been many questions, it's not uncommon for a Cyantian to have some sort of weapon, though usually not high powered ones as this is a social rather than military setting. Most of these weapons are either primarily ornamental, non-lethal in nature, or have other uses. Examples of weapons some characters might carry are a ceremonial dagger, a survival knife, a multi-tool similar to a Swiss army-knife, or a chemical attack deterrent (like mace). Students and Staff must also have permission from security to carry them. Weapons that haven't been approved are subject to confiscation. Rayne is in charge of what weapons get approved. If he doesn't like it, you don't get it... simple as that. Rayne isn't fond of guns, so you're not likely to get approval for them. For OOC purposes, we will let you know if you're over-the-top. If they don't carry a weapon, feel free to delete this part.

When coming up with views on other species, try not to rely on stereotypes.

If your history includes someone else's character, remember to clear that with them first. Your history should form one coherent story, not a sequence of notes.

Please bold the questions (and not your responses), and leave blank space between each question.

This Role-playing Game is called the Mars Academy Role Playing Game for a reason: It takes place at the Mars Academy of a universe tightly based on Syke's Cyantian Comics. More info on this world, and her comics can be found here. As such, characters from other realities will not be approved. Further, alien empires, species, and races that aren't a part of Syke's comic world will not be a part of this RP either. Yes, there are a few characters in existence that break this rule, however this rule was created after those characters were approved, and they have been grandfathered in. Please don't ask for characters of this type, the answer will be no.

In addition, there are certain types of characters that do exist, but are rare, powerful, and have the potential to wreck the RP for others in the hands of the wrong players. Some of these character types are completely banned, and cannot currently be played. IF any are in play, it was because they were grand fathered in from being approved before these types were disallowed.
These Include
• Bionic Characters - Either fully, or partially bionic (this includes Nano Technology)
• Elite Cyantians.

Some powerful or rare characters types can actually be played. If you want one of these characters, you're probably going to need to gain the trust of other players, learn gobs of information about the world of the comic, and the history of the RP it's self, as well as create a solid detailed background for the character. Some of these character types actually have special rules limiting their use. This will take a long time, and a lot of work, and you should probably create another kind of character first instead. We suggest a Cyantain Wolf.
These Include
• Members of Genetically created races (such as Genoworks products), including Hybrids that could not exist without genetic engineering, and characters who have had existing abilities enhanced, or new abilities added by Genetic Engineering.  An exception is made for Landwalkers.  This also includes children of one or more genetically altered or engineered parents, who inherit any traits that would cause any of their parents to be restricted characters. - Special Rules (see below)
• Terran Humans - Special Rules (see below)
• Technomages - Special Rules (see below)
• Cyantian Humans
• Utahraptors
• Koyoti
• Rifier
• Fox

There are a few species which have limited information on them, and so those characters will be harder to build, and may be harder to get approved. If you create a character concept with one of these, know that you?re getting yourself into a lot of work. These include
• Koyoti
• Otters
• Bovine/Equine
• Rifier
• Taboa
• Natives

The list of species as a whole follows.
Immigrant:
• Bears (Alpine areas)
• Cheetah (Desert)
• Fennec/Desert Fox (Desert)
• Fox (Vixinte Empire)
• Koyoti (live between the Wolf and Fox areas, traditionally anti-technology shamanistic)
• Mice
• Mounties (any type of non-Cheetah feline. Named such due to them living in the mountain regions, although also applies to those in Alpine regions like Snow Leopards)
• Otters (Alpine)
• Rabbits (Various Kingdoms)
• Rams (live near Rabbit Lands)
• Wolves (Wolf City-States)
• Bovine/Equine (not much known)
• Taboa (not much known)
• Utah raptors (ex-slaves like Rad Siane)
Natives:
• Craihs (kind of like sharks, but much nicer. You'll find that out when you go to medical)
• Neefla (Dolphins of a sort)
• Rifier
• Raiey (Ray)
• Digni (Armadillos of a sort)
• Jiliac (wilderness Kangaroos, the ones in SoS are Genoworks mods.)
Others:
• Humans (You may apply for a human that grew up on Cyantia, there are a number of them, or one rescued from hostile conditions on Earth like Jules and Marcus were (Terran humans have specific restriction placed upon them.  See below))
(These characters have specific restrictions placed upon them. See below.)
Special Restrictions
Certain character types have special restrictions.
Restricted Characters:
• Members of Genetically created races (such as Genoworks products), including Hybrids that could not exist without genetic engineering, and characters who have had existing abilities enhanced, or new abilities added by Genetic Engineering.  An exception is made for Landwalkers.  This also includes children of one or more genetically altered or engineered parents, who inherit any traits that would cause any of their parents to be restricted characters.
• Terran Humans
• Technomages
Some of them are supposed to be quite rare at the Mars Academy, or in the Cyantian universe in general, and for this reason we can't have them popping up all over the place at Mars Academy. Some of them are usually more powerful than other characters. If you wish to play a Restricted Character you will have the following additional restrictions:

1) You must provide a complete, detailed and descriptive biography on the character, including an in-depth background.

2) Your character must not be equipped with any abilities that go against the standard rule set for characters. You can't have a character with super powers or the like... Sirac (psionic raccoons) were an extremely limited run, and the C-Group skunks are likewise. Regular raccoons and skunks are plausible, though.

3) Your character will, provided it makes it to the Registration Thread, require an additional 20% extra votes over any limit that exists for normal characters. This currently means that rather than having a total of 4 votes needed (at least 1 moderator vote making 2 of them), you will instead have a total of 5 votes needed (at least 2 moderator votes making up 4 of them). Thus, a minimum of 2 moderators and 1 normal player must vote yes for your character to be approved.

4) Once a Restricted Character has been submitted to the Registration Thread, 8 new Non-Restricted Characters must be submitted to the Registration Thread before another Restricted Character may be submitted to the Registration Thread.  Only applications for new characters will be counted towards the 8.  Characters who are rejected, and then sent back to planning, who are submitted again will not advance the count.  If a Restricted Character has been submitted to the Registration thread and then Rejected, this character may be resubmitted to Registration without needing, or using one of the Restricted character application slots.

5) All registered players of over 6 months have the right to object to your application, and all objections must be overturned or the bio amended so that the objection no longer applies for the application to proceed.

6) Applications for technomages can include applications for existing characters to transfer to the technomage program.  However, the player must write a new application reflecting what impact the transfer will have on their character.  The new character bio is not retroactive. The bio will be valid from the start of the latest week opened up for RP. (Example: if weeks 13 and 14 are open for play, the new bio is valid for week 14, but not week 13.) The player is encouraged to RP the character applying for the course change IC in the week previous to the new bio being valid. This applies to those who are successful and those who are not.

Once again, you are highly encouraged to select another character type.

Adoption Notes:
The Academy is a turbulent place, and players come and go. However, characters who are involved in plotlines abruptly departing can have a significant negative impact. Please read the following on adopting a fuzzy.
1) Any character put up for adoption must be re-registered by the new player.

2) All players are encouraged to place their character up for adoption if they will be inactive for over 6 months time.

3) A previous player has 3 months, from the date of approval for the adoption by the forum, to reclaim their character. Once this period has expired, they are assumed to have reneged all rights to their character. The previous player has the right to waive this period, handing full control over to the new player immediately after approval. THEY MUST PUBLICLY POST THIS.

4) Once a character is adopted, and the 3 month period expired, the previous player cannot call any rights to the character.

5) Players wishing to play one of the strip's cannon characters (such as Collin, Twinky, Dallas) must ask Syke to put them up for adoption.

Other Notes:
You may use characters that started out in the current storyline strips, such as Hank Valpanix or Khaelis. Please be aware that if you apply for characters like Phoenix, you may face opposition.
As well, there have been certain NPC positions that beg to be played. Angel's lovely fox secretary would be an example.

Students, Faculty, Staff, and Merchants are all appropriate types. Remember that you'll be expected to play out your part if called on. A teacher should have classes, or at least mention of when they are so students that may be enrolled in them can know what times are unavailable for play in their schedule (or, conversely, what times they may play with the understanding that they've just skipped class). Merchants would be expected to receive customers. Faculty would be expected to fulfill their functions, if a related situation comes up in character, and they are on duty, and should have a flavor based on their position.

One final word: we may suggest, at times, that you may wish to try other RPGs, and have historically used MZDM, also known as the Napping Cat's Dream or NCD. This is not really a bad thing, just that you come off more as the type of role-player who would prefer a good action RP to the more sedate pace of MARPG. Unfortunately, the NCD is currently closed to new members. Those wishing to play types of Shivae or other sentient "wildlife" will likely be referred to our sister RP Forum, cleverly titled "Shivae! RPG"...

We break most threads, including the planning and registration threads, off at 200 posts for two primary reasons:
• It keeps the threads to a manageable size. Having over 500 posts in a single thread can be confusing, and people wonder if their post was missed.
• At one point, back in the history of The Nice, the UBB Board broke a thread over at MZDM when it got too long. Being a fellow RP forum, we tend to stick with the tradition they started by breaking off threads at 200 posts.
Suggestions on writing your registration:

Put the questions in bold. This helps break up the application, letting people easily tell where one section ends and the next starts.
Fill in all the questions.
Avoid using colors, fancy fonts, marquee, and the like.  Most consider the application serious, and disapprove of those made difficult to read.
Be original. Easier said than done, I know, but there's some clich?s that we've all started to grow tired of. "Name one thing your character would never do and why" has most of these, most are "hurt another".
Remember that some questions have "and why" added to them. Many others imply it.
You should have a darned good reason to have a weapon, especially if it is a two handed weapon, or a large energy weapon. Projectile weapons are right out. If you have it, common belief is that chances are you'll want to use it for whatever reason. A general rule-of-thumb is that if you look like you're trying to stand a chance in heck of beating Vedoo in combat, you're not going to get through registration.
Two new line characters between paragraphs really help.

In the interest of promoting character development, players are limited to 2 characters in Registration at a time (with 1 being strongly recommended).  Characters in excess of 2 will be ignored until the current character(s) are no longer in Registration, freeing up one of their Registration slots.

*Claxons begin sounding, the triple beat of a noob alert.  The airlock door slowly begins to open, and standing there is a rather bewildered looking n00b.  He stubles in, and promptly slips and falls on the floor.  "Squid," he shouts.  "These floors are slippery!"  As he picks himself up, he notices the multitude of pointy sticks aimed at him.  He puts his hands up, and drops a piece of folded paper in the process.  "Please don't poke me..."*
... at least not too much.
Full Name: Faryn Morkura (Pronounced Fay-Rin.)
Species: Siberian White Tiger (Mounty)
Age: 16
Type: Student
Function: Just got accepted to the academy, can?t decide between studying lift mechanics or technofamiliar design.
Quote: ?Who cares?!  Let?s just have fun!?

How much experience do you have with role-playing? How much time have you spent on MUSHs/MUXs/etc.?   Been doing PBP RPing off and on for three years, been playing old school ADND for a little over five years, and new school D20 3.5 for a little over three.  Never played a social RP, and am looking forward to the experience.

What is your character's personality?   As the above quote will show, Faryn is more fun loving than anything else, and unless it is interesting to him, (IE, anything to do with mechanics, computers, reading, or battle simulations,) he loses focus quickly.  He is obsessed with physical fitness, computers, and drawing.  He sees everything he does as substandard, and thus is continually trying to better himself.  He wants to be a straight A student, but because of his short attention span, has trouble maintaining a low B average.  He only has to read something once or do it once to remember the fact or action for life, and thus aces most tests.  However, he tends to lose assignments, or just forget about them, dropping his grades.  His organization system, to some, seems like pure chaos, but he can find anything he looks for in the blink of an eye.  The rest of his life reflects this.  His clothing is eclectic, and a lot of the time rumpled, and he has to be reminded by his PDA to even brush his teeth.  He has a large vocabulary, but rarely uses it unless he knows the person can keep up, in an effort to fit in.  He is very socially awkward, and has a small number of friends, but he knows those friends will be with him through thick and thin.  He has a hard time making new friends, and thus is having issues at the academy, having left all of his old friends back on Cyantia.

What things does s/he like? He loves problem solving, any form of engineering that he understands, learning, and physical activity.  His favorite food is Macaroni and Cheese, though he will try anything at least once, and will eat most everything edible put in front of him.  He loves experimenting with new combinations of food, and will eat most any of his concoctions.

Dislike?  He abhors anything that he sees as work, hates squishy vegetables, and dislikes the rain, mainly because he gets depressed.  He dislikes homework, unless it involves problem solving, like advanced calculus.  He also hates anything that he must do that seems too easy for him, like having to drill basic algebra into his head after mastering calculus and trig.

What are the strong points of your character?   He is continually trying to better himself, so he rarely makes the same mistakes twice.  He is highly intelligent, but doesn?t want to show it for fear of bullying or people laughing at him.  He is a self taught lift mechanic, and can fix the mechanical systems on most light lifts, but has trouble with the electronic components such as the shields or flight systems.  He is in the process of learning how to repair those as well, however.  He is very skilled with the construction and raising of technofamiliars, and wants his own, but is afraid that the technomages are the only ones that are allowed to have them.  He has the Boy Scout mentality of ?Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it?, and gives everything he does his all, even if he ?knows? it?s going to come out bad.

Weak points?  Faryn is easily depressed, easily distracted, and socially awkward.  He sees everything he does as substandard, unless an overwhelming majority force it into his head that it was superior, as it usually is to everyone but himself.  He tends to obsess a little too much on any project he is working on, to the exclusion of all else, including eating.

Name one thing your character would never do and why.   He would never give in to peer pressure or lose his cool in public.  It was drilled into his head from a very early age by his parents that to be a productive individual in society, he had to be his own person.  He values his freedom above all else, and if anybody tried to steer him in one direction or another that he didn?t want to go, especially his friends, he would make their life miserable.  He has also found that losing control of himself tends to have negative effects on everyone involved.  He?ll laugh and goof off, but he is slow to anger, extremely hard to insult, and prefers to think things through before he makes a decision.  This may seem to contradict the quote above, but the quote closely follows his weighing the options, the consequences, and the benefits.  And deciding that the benefits outweigh the consequences.  So screw the rules, this is gonna be fun!

How does s/he interact with others?  Anybody that Faryn doesn?t know well will see him as an aloof, very indrawn mounty, one that seems to stick out in any major social event.  He tends to stay on the sidelines, and not interact that much with others.  But he is a whole different person when it comes to his friends.  He is outgoing, goofy, caring, and willing to do anything to protect them.  He is hard to get to be your friend, but once he is, he will literally fight to the death for you.

What are their abilities, hobbies, things they're good at?  As stated earlier, he is excellent at problem solving, can fix most light lifts, and is extremely proficient with computer systems.  He is a visual spatial thinker, meaning that he works best in silence when trying to fix complex engineering issues, and can easily visualize and test most mechanical setups without ever putting stylus to bookplate.  He is a good shot, at least in battle simulations, and can run with speed and endurance.  He is skilled with software design, having written all of the functions for his PDA himself.  In his spare time, when he?s not goofing off or studying, he will come up with ideas for new lift designs and fiddles around with hardware design for computer systems.  He is also extremely interested in grav ball, battle simulations, and fencing.

MENTION if they carry some sort of weapon.  He sometimes caries a ceramic bladed combat survival knife, with a blade about eight inches long, matte black.  It sheathes on his upper calf or belt, depending on what he is wearing.

Give an example description of your character.  Faryn is a six foot nine inch Siberian white tiger, well muscled but not buff.  He is usually straight faced, showing no expression, but it is not uncommon for him to break out into a grin or frown.  He almost always wears a pair of rather scuffed and worn, but still usable, black combat boots, mainly because they are comfortable.  He will always be found wearing functional and comfortable clothes, even to a dance or something of that sort.  There are two major outfits that Faryn wears, depending on what he is doing.  When in school, he usually wears a pair of black cargo pants, with pockets at the knee and mid thigh, made of a thick and durable material.  He usually wears a large, loose shirt to hide his musculature, and a black safari jacket over top that.  Around his waist is a black webbed belt, on which he carries his PDA and comm.  Around his neck, he wears a small silver dragon pendant on a fine chain.  When he is not going to classes, he usually wears a pair of black jeans, a tight fitting mottled forest green shirt, the belt, with comm and PDA, the dragon pendant, and a loose fitting olive drab button up shirt, usually unbuttoned.  He can be found wearing a pair of gold reflective sunglasses, and a small music player with the headphones around his neck, the music usually playing.  He usually reserves wearing his knife for outdoors work or battle simulations.

What qualities or traits does your character have that would be useful to the Mars Academy currently, or in the future when it becomes a colony? This includes skills, and for those that would need to apply, qualifications.  Faryn wants to be either a lift designer, building his own lifts, or a researcher on technofamiliars, coming up with ways to make them more realistic.  He has skills with basic robotics engineering, software design, and many other arcane subjects.  He is willing to learn any skills he would need to remain at mars academy, however.

Why does your character want to be at the Academy rather than at another Academy, or some other location?  Faryn has had a major hero worship for Darius Akaelae ever since he discovered the sport of grav ball.  His one great hope in life is to meet THE Darius Akaelae.  Thus traveling all the distance to mars academy when he could have gotten a sufficient education elsewhere.

What goals does your character have for the future? His main goal is to meet Darius, though that may not be likely.  He has implemented a rigorous study and organization program to increase his grades, all in the hopes of meeting his idol.  His secondary goal, and the one he has had since he understood the concept, is to be an exceptional engineer.  Not necessarily famous, but great.

What is your characters nature and thoughts on others of his/her species?  He has no stereotypical opinions about any members of his race, preferring instead to meet and get to know the person before passing judgment.

What is his or her view on other species?  He has a slight distrust of other species, except for wolves, as he has spent much time around them.  Other than that, he tends to approach people of other species with the same attitude as those of his species, preferring to pass judgment after getting to know the person.

Please answer the following in a couple paragraphs: What is your character's history? Who is or was your characters family? What were the important events of your characters past? What kind of life did they have before they arrived at the academy?
Faryn?s life starts out exciting, gets rather boring, and then over the past two years, picks up the interest again.  First of all, he is adopted, living in a house where his mother is a wolf and his father is a cheetah.  When he was around three months old, his biologic parents were killed by a crazed wolf, the day they were meant to return to their home from wolf lands.  He was almost immediately put into foster care, and the couple that were caring for him eventually adopted him at around the age of four.  Three years before the adoption, however, they took in another foster child, Artherige, who was at the time about five years older than Faryn.  They became great friends, and when he was adopted, she was as well.  When he was around ten, his father convinced his mother to move to mounty lands.  The week before his thirteenth birthday, he became extremely depressed, and had to be hospitalized for a month.  This was due to his pet whip, who had been with him for years, dieing.  Around fifteen, he got into some trouble for rashly hacking into a remote wolf server, and got picked up by the police.  He spent six months in boot camp for the offense, and since then, has been very careful to think things through before he does them.  About two months ago, he was doing some research on academys that he was eligible to go to, and found mars academy.  His mother said go, so he went.
He has no extended family that he knows of, but has his sister, Artherige, who is working for security at Mars Academy, his mother, who grew up in the wolf city of Centralis, and his father, who has bounced all over the place as a merchant.  His life before the Academy was filled with goofing off with his friends, relaxing at the local water park, and just all around having fun.

If you're applying for a character that's been at the academy a while, what's happened to them at the academy? How have they spent their time here?None.

Just a few questions of my own:

First, could he have a technofamiliar type pet without being a technomage?  Possibly one that he built?

Second, on the topic of battle simulations, I was wondering what that would be.  I would like it to be something similar to paintball, but if there is nothing at mars academy like that, what other alternatives are there for a combat type high?

Third, would he be able to persue training in two different feilds at the same time?  Because i would like both of his life choices to be able to take place, but if nothing else I will make him major in lift mechanics.

*whips out "ye olde blackberry cane" and takes a few experimental swings*

One thing I feel I should mention is that cheetahs are not quite grouped with mounties, though I could see it as logical for one to live and spend a great deal with them, and this is not something that I see as detrimental in any way to the profile.

I'd recommend having a major decided before coming to the academy, though that isn't a major roadblock. Perhaps a major in one subject with a minor in the other, or something. (Like majoring in technofamiliar design with some lift mechanics on the side.)

And to answer some of your questions:

I do believe it is possible to have a technofamiliar style pet without being a technomage, though I believe it is quite uncommon. In Campus Safari, Chatin was given one by another character who designed and created them, though I believe that those qualify as special circumstances. It is far more common to have something such as a mini-whip for a pet--non-mechanized, of course. I would also think that the process of making a technofamiliar would be extremely expensive, though. I'd warn against it.

I do believe there is laser-tag somewhere at the academy, if not additional, similar games. :)

I do believe it would be possible to pursue both fields of study, though it would be an extremely heavy workload and not at all recommended for someone who has plans on doing anything such as sleeping, eating, or living for an extended period of time. It would be like majoring in law and medicine at the same time. :P Again, not something I would recommend. I do think it is more reasonable to have a major in one and a minor in the other, though.

*hands cane to Xi Li* "Here, have fun."
"With pleasure!" *prances into locker room*
*screaming*
"I should let her do all my torturing." >:D

On an unrelated note, we may have to change the links in this thread so that the ones that point to the old forum (which is being replaced with this one) instead point to the duplicate threads in this forum. Yeah, sounds like a pain in the neck to me, too.

Got a few more questions. *Grins*

First of all, I wasn't really thinking of the technofamiliar pet as really like a technofamiliar.  I was planning on having him bring with him some project that he had built, kind of like what the NASA JPL is doing, except in the form of a small green lizard, with an AI that he wrote.  Not necesarily extremely realistic like a familiar, but with true to life movement.  Maybe put together from comercial robotics kits.  Would that be possible?

Second of all, I was looking over some of the other character posts, and noticed that six four is rather short for a tiger mounty.  Could somebody give me an estimated hieght range for a tiger?

Finaly, are ther any places to do something along the lines of a multi day hiking and camping trip?  Otherwise, I can just delete the idea for him to be an avid outdoorsman.

First, I'd say next revision of your profile should get it's own thread.  The first one was developed enough to make the jump, but you're new so it's all good. :P

dislikes the rain, mainly because he gets depressed
Seeing as Mars is being Terraformed, and it's raining practically 24-7, how's he going to get anything done if he ever looks through the roof or passes a window? ;P

He is very skilled with the construction and raising of technofamiliars
How's that?  I'm fairly sure that's not grade school material on Cyantia and it's something you come into blind at the academy level.  Perhaps he's raised a lot of pets and could easily handle raising one that would eventually become a technofamiliar?

First of all, he is adopted, living in a house where his mother is a wolf and his father is a cheetah.
How did that affect his childhood, that being a rare and frowned upon pairing?  Did he take flak from the other kids despite being adopted and not a half breed?

First, could he have a technofamiliar type pet without being a technomage?  Possibly one that he built?
Like KJ said, building a technofamiliar is a very expensive thing.  If he had the money to pay for the specially bred animal and the parts, I don't think anyone would stop him from having one (although, it likely would not be given any of the powers a technomage's familiar would have).  But he couldn't just talk someone into letting him have one, the materials would be seen as wasted on a non-mage.

Second, on the topic of battle simulations, I was wondering what that would be.  I would like it to be something similar to paintball, but if there is nothing at mars academy like that, what other alternatives are there for a combat type high?
The holodome has laser tag, and I imagine it can do simulations similar to the always popular Star Trek holodeck.

Third, would he be able to persue training in two different feilds at the same time?  Because i would like both of his life choices to be able to take place, but if nothing else I will make him major in lift mechanics.
Just like a double major in real life, it would be hard but doable in the long run.  However, if he has trouble with grades and forgetting projects I imagine it would be exponentially harder for him (especially since a full or over full course load would be needed in order to graduate before he was 40 :P).

Maybe... but something makes me doubt that even on Cyantia there would be commercial parts of any kind that could reproduce realistic movement on that small of a scale without needing special training and serious knowledge on the subject to do it yourself.

Second of all, I was looking over some of the other character posts, and noticed that six four is rather short for a tiger mounty.  Could somebody give me an estimated hieght range for a tiger?
http://shivae.org/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Mounty  Read it while it's still there, the wiki often goes into limbo.

Finaly, are ther any places to do something along the lines of a multi day hiking and camping trip?  Otherwise, I can just delete the idea for him to be an avid outdoorsman.
Aside from the gardens (which are extremely extensive, as I picture them, but walking across the widest part of them might take a half an hour to an hour at most depending on your pace) not really.  Access to Mars outside is controlled and as far as I understand it "I'm going for a walk" isn't a good enough explanation. :P  I imagine the rec center would have rock climbing walls and such though.

What happened to the foxes?  I thought last time I checked that they weren't restricted.  Apparently I was wrong.  Do I have to finish Faryn to put up a restricted character?

Foxes in general are not restricted. They require a lot of thought and research, though. :P

<-- spent many many hours with nose buried in wiki before creating a fox. :P

Wolves, mice, and mounties are easier to work with. With foxes, you need to consider the affects of the social caste system and the plague, the fact that they have their own language, and were at one point considered "the bad guys" because of the war between them and the wolves.

You do not have to wait to create another character, restricted or not, but for a restricted character, you need to wait for a restricted slot to open up. I'm not sure how many more regular characters have to get in before another restricted slot opens up. I think it was 2, but I'm not really sure. One thing though, you can only have 2 characters in spaceport at the same time. (2 of yours that are in the registration process, that is.) If you are working on 3 or more, the extras must wait in queue until one of the others ends the registration process.

I hope that was worded in a suitably understandable manner. :P

Foxes aren't restricted, they're "frowned up" I suppose.

We already have a lot of them, they seem to be the most popular species for people to work with, but the fox plague is said to have wiped out 99+% of their original population making them actually very rare.  Most of the survivors would have been woods foxes and farmers in the rural areas, or those adults off planet or with inside information that gave them prior warning (which would have been a handful at most).  This means ALL fox histories would have to include something about the plague and how it effected them (especially the adults).  And like KJ said, the caste system would play some sort of role in their lives.  Essentially, we have much higher standards for fox profiles than any other.

As for restricted characters, daemon keeps a tally under the thread starter.  With Yanoi now in registration that means a spot is actually open (tally just needs to be adjusted), but I would advise against any restricted apps until you're done with Faryn.

Thanks muchly both of you.  It was greatly helpfull.  Kind of figured it would be smart to finish up faryn before postin' a restricted, but sometimes my creative juices get flowing faster than normal, and i have the character finished unexpectedly.  Just wanted to make sure.
Few more questions, though.  In faryns profile, it was said that his parents adopted him at the same time that they adopted a young fox female.  Around how long ago was the fox plague, and if she was adopted so young, would the caste system really have affected her?  It may be that she was a last survivor of her family after the plague fizzled out, and Faryns parents, being the charitable type, traveld there to help with reconstruction from the disaster and found her.  Then again, it may not.

I'm going to have to remember to double check, but as I recall the plague was ~10 years ago.  How much the caste system would have affected her probably depends on where she was before she was orphaned.... and she's going to have major trauma if she's a survivor while everyone died of the plague around her.

Wait, really?  I thought I remembered someone's second try being counted again in the tally many moons ago...  Oh well. :P

The "they were already out of the country" option is one I didn't mention.  Running from Rashon's oppressive regime, especially as objectors to the purge, would be a valid reason.  Perhaps the parents, being city foxes forced to leave on foot with their child, died crossing the mountains that separate the fox lands from everyone else (I would point you toward a map on the wiki I have a basic memory of, but that would require a wiki :P).  Soida's back story is based around this premise (except, without the familial death :P), and a character in my fanfic called Lacern was also out of the country at the time of the plague because his mother was a defector that took him with her.  Of course, they're both in their 30s; but if daemon remembers correctly about the plague, then there would be time to run from fox lands prior to the plague and still be student age.

As for the caste system effect on an adopted child, I would think it depends.  A fox, or his/her adoptive parents, could choose to learn/teach as much as possible about the fox's native culture.  Contact with minority groups within the country is also another factor (like Little Italy in New York, I imagine minority groups within the various countries on Cyantia would gravitate together).  They would probably have a similar form of social hierarchy as their home culture and enforce it by peer pressure.  All it takes is going there as a child on a regular basis, perhaps to take classes at an enrichment center to perpetuate the foreign culture, and they would have some sort of impression for life.  If the parents aren't all that support of the child's original culture, the impression would be minimal.  However, that also carries the risk of the child lashing out in the volatile teen years by rejecting their parent's beliefs and self researching into their own culture to stick to it out of defiance, possibly seeing their parent's efforts as "repression" of their roots.  I would guess (and this is my guess, based on personal opinions about psychology from person experience and observance, take it or leave it) that being a mixed couple like Faryn's parents are in a society that didn't condone it, and adopting two different species from themselves (as cheetahs aren't quite the same as the rest of the mounties, if I remember correctly, and have some interbreeding problems besides living in a completely different region from the rest of the felines), they would be highly supportive of their children's respective cultures and try to teach it and nurture in them as many of the good aspects as possible.  So the exposure would probably be high, even if they didn't agree with the practice.

Right, Cheetah and Fox cannot breed with any other species (except that foxes can have kids with the other kinds of foxes, arctic and fennec).

The only character I remember being counted twice was Darius Fan's gold fox where he completely changed the character's personality and history between submissions, so the only similarity between the two versions was the name and appearance.
