FULL NAME: David Kelly O'Neill
SPECIES: Human
AGE: 26
TYPE: Civilian
FUNCTION: Refugee
GROUP: Terran Human
QUOTES: "I don't judge... out loud."
"Frowning requires more muscles than smiling; so, I'm building facial strength... constantly."
"Hey - At Ease yourself there, you." (Poor grammar intentional) plus all other manner of Marine jargon

How much experience do you have with roleplaying? MUSHs/MUXs/etc?
None; first time

PERSONALITY
Humble, reserved, stoic, emotionally removed; 'strong silent type' to a tee. David is strong-minded & -willed, confident, very independent and self-reliant. A firm believer in Christ, he has a strong code of ethic borrowing in part from his military background & discipline. One of those convictions is high value on life, and he would be very unselfish with his if another were in peril (since his soul is saved and theirs might not). Regularly easy-going and laid-back, he is extremely cautious when entering a new or unfamiliar situation. Almost never impulsive and not prone to sudden outbursts, he prefers to be subtle. Believes in always being prepared and having a plan B, and C, and D... just in case. Tries to avoid predictable patterns and keeps constant situational and spatial awareness (ingrained from training). Would much rather not be the center of attention, keeping to himself and liking to be invisible most of the time. He is more than content to be persona-non-grata until more accustomed to and comfortable in this strange new world

LIKES
Exercising, hiking & rock-climbing, pushing his physical limits, weapons & all things Marine Corps., meat, motorcycles, off-roading, good beer, better whiskey, smoking a pipe (occasionally a cigar), sleep (after occupational deficit), solitude or good company, music from the most elegant classical to the most brutal metal to plain and simple country, and playing guitar; he takes great pleasure when others enjoy this musical talent

DISLIKES
Clutter & disorganization, abstract concepts, weak handshakes, speech fillers, salad, vanity, being touched, conceit, big cities, drama, having to explain himself, word contractions, rap, being vulnerable, coffee, math, troublemakers, beating-around-the-bush, ticks, large crowds, notoriety

STRONG POINTS
Calmness and mental fortitude, perseverance, physical endurance, agility & reflexes. Once his trust is earned, none is more loyal or faithful. Highly dependable and easy to rely on, he handles everything with professionalism and competence. He places great value on his word, and you know he will do what he says. Will always stop to help someone if they need it. When it comes down to it, he can more than hold his own in a fight, even outnumbered. Does not go looking for them, but if one finds him he likes to finish it swiftly. Actually much smarter than he lets-on

WEAK POINTS
Somewhat anti-social, he does not reach out to others and is introverted almost to a fault. Though he is sincere, he will keep everyone at a distance and require them to earn his trust, making it difficult to connect or build bridges. Coupled with the extreme rarity of any smiling, this impassive and detached manner may be perceived as insensitive. Others may also think he takes dedication a little too far and is too serious, often mistaking his humor for sarcasm and succinctness for being terse. He is thick-skinned (figuratively and literally, see abilities) and does not really care what others say or think about him up to the point were words become actions. Then he is slightly vengeful, and if pranked or affronted he will respond disproportionately and hold silent grudges if insulted enough. Has an aversion to change or new things outside his comfort zone and a tendency to be unnecessarily hard on himself. Also slightly paranoid and always alert for attacks, which is partly why close, tight spaces agitate him

ONE THING HE WOULD NEVER DO
Be crass, vulgar, or inappropriate. He conducts himself in a proper manner that best represents himself and his profession and holds himself to a high standard, not wanting to lower his stature

INTERACTION
Prefers to listen rather than talk. Straight-forward and soft-spoken, he chooses words carefully, and does not speak if it does not add meaningfully to the conversation or need to be said. He is polite and tactful, but if he can give an answer in one word or less he will, making a conscious effort to speak with as few words as possible. One exception is he will always be the one to state the obvious for those who need it. He is understanding and sympathetic when others relate to him, but refrains from opening up in return. Likes to inject humor with a turn-of-phrase, play on words, or simple irony, but struggles between expressing his light-heartedness or presenting himself as a collected professional. He usually goes with the latter, the result may be appearing cynical and sardonic. David may also seem aloof and unapproachable, but if someone engages him he will prove very down to earth. Will return kindness with the same, and very selective about acquaintances

HOBBIES, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Well-trained in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu and Muay Boran emphasizing intense body hardening (such as smashing cinderblock) in addition to throwing weapon mastery, which he incorporates into MCMA (Marine Corps. Martial Art). Has had a guitar as long as he remembers and can play any melody he hears on acoustic, electric, or bass, sometimes even improvising harmony roles by himself. Likes to tinker and work on his truck and bikes, but is far from a mechanic. He is however, an intuitive vehicle operator and has a knack for diffusing high-emotion situations with his neutral, calm demeanor (but it's not something he likes doing). Also incredibly stealthy and capable of sneaking just about anywhere

WEAPONS
Two folding knives and a several shuriken

DESCRIPTION
Unremarkable; little over 6 ft tall, Caucasian, well built and muscular with broad shoulders, unshaven, high-and-tight dark brown hair, stony-faced with grey eyes usually covered by sunglasses. T-shirt and jeans kinda guy as far as clothes go

TRAITS/QUALIFICATIONS
Exceptional physical shape and strong work ethic, extensive leadership experience, musical prowess - expert marksman, champion motocross and street bike racer, 5th Dan Bujinkan & MCMA instructor, learned in Japanese, German, and Russian (though not fluent)

GOALS
Not get dead, learn Cyantian common language & perhaps a new instrument, find something to occupy the day, make the best of being here, set as many human record firsts on Mars as possible, break 15 minutes on a three mile run, eventually return to Earth and the Corps.

Why is it essential for your character to be at the Mars Academy?
He instantly became a 'conspirator/corroborator' to the AMIB after 'aiding and abetting escape of an extraterrestrial subject' and was exfiltrated by the Cyantians to the nearby Academy to avoid the distress that would have followed

What are his thoughts on his own species?
He has met far more good people than bad, which seems counter-intuitive with all the conflict and agitators in the world and contrary to his generally pessimistic view that people are inherently bad. Overall though he is proud of humanity, perhaps having not known anything else. After meeting Cyantians, he is struck by the realization that man is not the only species in the universe. This completely shatters his notions about... a lot of things, though he still holds humans in no lower regard

What are his views on other species?
His knowledge about the different species is extremely limited, but he will try to identify more with the Wolves he meets, probably due mostly to his first contact. Unsure whether to trust Fox or not upon learning of their... turbulent history. Very suspicious of all technomages. Wonders if there is a connection to mythical weres, and if catnip will have the same effect...

HISTORY
The oldest of two children to a Scots/Irish United States Marine Gunnery Sergeant and German/Polish mother, he grew up in Colorado Springs. The family enjoyed the outdoors and frequently went camping, hiking, and fishing. He also learned young how to off-road on his father's jeep and motorbike, and studied several languages under the encouragement of his mother. The importance of faith was very prevalent in the home and continues to be of great personal significance. His life's goal has always been to become a Marine, following in his father's footsteps, and he began rigorous physical and combative training early in childhood to achieve it. Has a close relationship with his younger sister, who shares most of his interests. Disciplined multiple times for having a knife in school. Spent a summer in Asia studying martial arts; two months in Japan with Grand Master Masaaki Hatsumi, and one in Thailand under Kru Preang.
He enlisted the year after, as soon as age and high school education allowed. In the years that followed he quickly rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant, serving two combat tours in Afghanistan and another two in Iraq, including the battle for Fallujah. Fellow Marines gave him the callsign 'Terminator' for his very serious and resolute conduct. When not warring, he withdrew as much as he could from the Quantico Base barracks to the solace of the wilderness to hunt and relax by himself. It was while on one of these hunting excursions during a week of leave where SSgt O'Neill came upon an incredibly unusual set of tracks in the forest...
-   -   -   -   -   -   -
They were quite unlike anything he had ever seen before. The pad imprint bore remarkable resemblance to a wolf paw, but it was unnaturally large. He was further perplexed by the order of the tracks; they didn't seem to follow a quadruped moving pattern. Intrigued by the seeming bipedal organization, he started to follow the erratic trail with the impression that this creature had done the latter of the fight-or-flight instinct. At the same time it proved a difficult task; the tracks were far from obvious, as the animal had made an effort to disguise its way, and it took all his skill not to lose them. Some time later he was led to a dense wooded draw, where the trunk of huge fallen tree obscured his view. As he drew nearer the sound of moving water reached his ears and he noticed the trees ahead thinned to expose the rocky bank of a mountain stream. The tracks had vanished. No matter, this had not been the first time; he would investigate the draw to see if he could reacquire them before giving into the allure of splashing his face with some of that fresh stream water.
Approaching the edge of the small ravine, he started to examine the ground on the bottom when something caught his eye. A soft, rounded shape stuck out from the bed of pine needles that covered the ground under the downed trunk. Peering farther into the draw, the shape revealed itself to be furry, grey paw. As David's glance followed the paw up to the leg it was attached to, he was surprised to find what appeared to be pants as well. This truly fascinated him and he looked under the tree to see the panted-paw's owner. To his shock, he found a wolf. Sort of. It had lupine fur, ears, muzzle, and teeth, but was standing on two legs and pressing itself with two arms flat up against the side of the ditch like a person trying to hide. Looking over what seemed a physical impossibility and the ripped, muddy clothes it wore, he was even more confounded by long, matted, dirty blonde human-like hair that was tied back in a pony-tail. But what struck David most was the look of fright in her eyes, which turned to terror as they widened with the sight of the .308 rifle he carried.
He froze, watching her watch him with deathly fear. Once time had caught up and he shook off the surprise, David removed his sunglasses and tried to soften the astonishment on his face to reassure the poor thing. Without taking his eyes away, he very slowly took one hand off the rifle and slung it over his shoulder. The she wolf blinked and seemed taken aback; raising his hands palm-out David next inched his way slowly down into the draw. At a loss for a suitable statement, he simply spoke: 'Fear not'. There was a pause, and the wolfess' expression changed as she said 'You... you are not going to shoot me?' in a wavering voice. He should not have been any more surprised (after all, she was a wolf person wearing clothes) but it still caught him off guard to witness her speaking (in English, too!). 'Why would I?' he replied calmly. She visibly started to relax; 'You are not one of them?' It begged the obvious follow-up question from David: 'Who?'
Agents - Men In Black, she said. David asked if she had seen them here; she nodded forcefully. He carefully scanned around the forest for any traces, the asked why they were going to shoot her. The lady wolf briefly explained that she was from another planet, and it was just what those humans do. Then David got a bad feeling in his gut. Glancing around once again, he thought fast and pulled a camouflaged jacket out of the large rucksack on his back before throwing it over the fugitive, leaving instruction not to move until he returned and tapped on it four times. She nodded and curled up under it, sliding under the hanging branches of the fallen tree. David threw several handfuls of pine needles over to additionally break up the outline, then crawled backwards into a thicket of undergrowth at the top of the draw.
A minute passed then a figure came out of the woods, approaching the great log from the same direction David had, following the wolf's trail. When he reached its end, he looked around with exasperation. Then taking a deep breath, he leaned against the trunk and took a long drink from his camelback. His appearance was somewhat surprising to David; after the wolf mentioned 'agents' and 'men in black' he expected suits and sunglasses. This man wore a typical hunting pattern outfit, but it was the gear he carried with him that stuck out. It was all very sophisticated: advanced GPS, a high-tech satellite radio, state-of-the-art infrared and thermal imagers, and a number of other devices he did not recognize.
After a few minutes, the man seemed to catch his breath and stood up as if to continue on, when the old tree he had been resting on suddenly perked his interest. He began examining the area around it, easing his way to the draw. David tensed; he was methodically getting closer and closer to the hiding wolf. Then the hunter peered at the ground and cocked his head. This made the Marine very uneasy; without a noise he slipped off his rucksack and silently started crawling towards the man. It was slow, but though his target was going slower, he had more ground to cover. They were both going in a straight line directly towards the spot where the coat lay.
Then the hunter stopped. David froze briefly, fearing detection, but the other was too focused on the odd shape under the tree to notice. They both continued their approaches, the first hunter as carefully as he could and the second as fast as he dared. He was standing right over the coat now. SSgt O'Neill had almost reached the top of the draw and could see his target reaching slowly down towards the jacket. A half dozen scenarios flashed through his mind as he went over options and the tools he had; he did not need to kill him, but did not know how far the man would go to get the she wolf. The hunter had no inclination to the presence of the leatherneck behind him, he was an inch from finding his prize...
...when David leapt upon him, the sudden force knocking him away from the hidden wolf as the two men rolled into the gully. The victim tried reaching for any weapon he could grab, but his arms were trapped by the Marine?s legs, and two thick, strong arms had found their way around his neck in a sleeper hold. He couldn't call out because the air had been knocked out of him by the force of the assailant's impact, and he floundered in vain as he slowly lost consciousness...
Quickly scanning the area, David got up and approached the coat, noting that it seemed to have moved and shifted just slightly. He tapped it loudly, and a furry head with a frightened expression revealed itself. 'Let's go', he said turning and running back for his ruck; the wolfess followed. Throwing it back onto his back, he turned back around to be surprised by just how tall the wolf lady actually was standing on even ground with him. He inquired if she had a rescue coming from her kind. Her answer was that they should be coming soon; the staff sergeant kindly offered to lead her to an open area to make a possible landing easier.
Following the edge of the creek roughly two miles, they traveled to a clearing where David had been hunting earlier. Wary that their adversaries would probably be focused on open areas for the same reason they were, he stopped them in the thick tree line. Then making sure the wolfess had enough concealment, he went around the perimeter of the field to secure it. Halfway around he was cornered by two more scowling men dressed like the first hunter. Apprehensive of their intentions, our hero waited for them to make a move. They did not disappoint; making a rush to seize him, they were instead surprised by the Marine's sharp elbows. One went down, but the other drew a knife. The two grappled on the ground, struggling for control of it until David got the advantage, head butting his opponent in the face then knocking him out with the knife's pommel.
A few minutes after returning to the spot where the wolf hid, she and David spotted several more wolf folk and massive tiger approaching in armor suits. They were tense at the first sight of O'Neill, but relaxed under the convincing of the fugitive she wolf. The enormous tiger urged David to return with them for his own safety, but he declined and left to return to his campsite despite the tiger's insistence. He arrived around dusk to find it swarming with men including three familiar hunters, two of which began emphatically pointing him out to a black woman with a scar on her face. A dozen of them seized the Marine, despite the several broken bones he dealt out in the struggle. They tackled him into the dirt, ripping away his rifle and kicking him repeatedly in the ribs. As they started to cuff him the area was suddenly lit up with bright flashes.
The men collapsed and slumped to the ground; David thought he saw the scarred woman dash into the forest before was roughly pulled to his feet. It was the other wolves and the tiger, who was now adamant; they all had to leave IMMEDIATELY. This time the Marine agreed, snatching a large oblong soft case from his tent and his weapon before hustling off with them.  Night fell as they lead him away from the previous field, roughly a klick (kilometer) in the opposite direction, to a stylish quasi-saucer shaped object that had to be a ship of some kind. Inside, the wolfess met his eyes and gestured to an empty spot next to where she was seated. He flopped down into it as the ship took off with a rumble. Gently, David set the oblong case next to him and began unloading the rifle in his hands as he gazed out the viewer. It was slightly strange, but he felt no loss as he watched his planet grow smaller. He was sure that this was just a temporary disruption to get him away from whatever agents were down there. Soon it would settle down a bit, and then they would take him back and drop him off in a few hours...

A scuffle between the two men ensued, which resulted in O'Neill disarming and incapacitating the other. The profusely grateful she-wolf led him away into the forest, telling the human in perfect English where she was from and why they were both now in peril from a zealous government bureau. Hours later and miles away a spacecraft arrived to extract the wolf, and O'Neill as well. However, confident he could avoid the torture and danger, the man declined and withdrew into the woods. Nonetheless he was later apprehended by the AMIB, but by a bold and extremely risky Cyantian intervention the same crew which had retrieved the wolfess returned to extract ONeill as well.
SSgt O'Neill, David K. (USMC) was then exfiltrated to the Cyantian Academy on Mars, with only his rucksack and what he could carry in hand from his camp tent.
