Possible IRL Cyantia?
« on: December 06, 2011, 12:41:09 pm »
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-16040655

In short: 600 light years from Earth, there's a planet two and a half times the size of Earth with a surface temperature of 22 degrees C (72 degrees F or so).  We're still not sure if there's water there, but it's WAY deep in the life belt and possibly might be the first habitable or near-habitable world found by us humans.

Comments, thoughts?  And yes, I've read the article and its' uncertainties...  The size, though, reminds me of what's been written about Cyantaxia thus far...
The whole history of science has been the gradual realization that events do not happen in an arbitrary manner, but that they reflect a certain underlying order, which may or may not be divinely inspired.  --Stephen W. Hawking : "A Brief History of Time"

A temperature off 22°C... considering the middle temperature of earth is 15°C, it's more or less a huge tropical island :)

Assuming it has water and an atmosphere.  They still haven't confirmed that.

Well, let's say it has. even then it would look like this: small polar caps, two small stripes of more or less habitable land and then big deserts and boiling oceans.

Gonna soooooo regret it... but I think I'll read the whole series again one of these days... I kinda liked the first three books (all Mum had) as a kid. ;)

I always talk about how Tolkien shaped me as a kid and the giant impact he had on my writing psyche, but McCaffrey was right there in that same era of my life and while I think Tolkien and Jacques had more impact on my style I think McCaffrey definitely planted in me the idea of epic fantasy and sci-fi being able to hold hands and get along swimmingly, which is just about all I write these days.
