Still trying to use sorcery.net? Might I suggest irc.nightstar.net? It's rather lightly loaded and totaly responsive.

Sorcery.net works, and the channel is established. As well some oldbies drop by there after months of being away quite periodicly (like the gutterfish). Also, Shippou went to a lot of hard work to get the channel's premissions sorted last month so it would be a waste to upsticks so soon.

That and I finally bothered to get my nick re-registered on Sorcery.net. I cba to do that again for at least another 6 months :p

Please do come over to Sorcery.Net

I'm working during a bulk of the day, but Eekee is oftentimes there manning it, and it has become a bit more active as of late.

In addition, I am thinking of setting up a second channel for any roleplay needs, if anyone wants to try that.

There are java-based IRC applications that allow access to pretty much all the functions of IRC, designed to be embedded in a web page.  I've used them, and they can be set up to specifically connect to a listed, predefined server and channel.

I have had reliable experiences using this version:  http://www.pjirc.com/about.php

Hopefully this will help.

This might be a bit premature, but I did register the #MarsAcademy channel on Sorcery.Net

This could be used as a moderated channel for IRC-based roleplay.  For the moment it's a secret, un-moderated channel.

Helpful note to all the people new to IRC that aren't sure about nicks and registering them, when you sign on type:

/nickserv register PASSWORD EMAIL

And it will automatically register the nick you're currently using (if it's not already registered by someone else, in that case you'll have to try with something else).  You can then set up your client to log you on with this nick and password.  If your client is bare bones and doesn't do that (or you can't figure out how) then when you connect to sorcery.net, type:

/nickserv identify NICK PASSWORD

If you ever get lost /nickserv help will enlighten you. Smiley

Actually, if your client doesn't have integrated nickserv support, there'll be no /nickserv command. Use
Code:
/msg nickserv register password_here email_here
/msg nickserv identify nick_here password_here
instead.

And if you're interested about other functionality (RECLAIM is very useful to me, for example), there's always
Code:
/msg nickserv help

If you want to stop by, we can voice you as well, even if your name isn't registered.

(A registered nick is only required to get auto-voiced.)

Since Dedalous asked, this is my take on getting on IRC.  If someone wants to speak up with more specific instructions, or better clients, or specific instructions for a specific client, please do so.

To get on IRC you need an IRC compatible client.  Ones that deal with IRC, and that I've heard are popular, are XChat, the ChatZilla addon for Firefox (if you use Firefox as your web browser), and Trillian.  I use Pidgin since I already use it for my AIM, MSN, and Jabber accounts.  Once you've picked one and have it installed, the account management in each one should have a form to fill out for the server you're going to connect to.  The server is irc.sorcery.net, then choose a nickname to use on the server.  Since your nick won't be registered yet, DON'T put a password, it will mess things up.  There is also a chance that someone else has already registered the nick you want to use, in that case the nickserv will tell you and you'll have to pick another name.  Once you're connected, you should get a welcome message from the infoserv and nickserv.  Type /join #shivaestudios and you'll join the main channel.

If you want to know more about various commands, what moderated and unmoderate channels are, and navigating through the many channels available on the server (should you feel so adventurous), there's a tutorial available for that.

There are also free online java sites that you can use to connect to various IRC servers. http://www.sorcery.net/chat.html is the one on the sorcery.net website.

If you feel you'll be connecting more often, a dedicated client like mIRC will often do better for IRC than a client designed around one-on one messaging like pidgin.

Just checked the link above.  It takes a good minute to connect, but it works.
